Speaking Of Sex, Watch One Of The Last D’Angelo & The Soultronics Performances From 2000

first_imgThe North Sea Jazz Fest hosted D’Angelo for one of his last performances with The Soultronics, right before he took a 14-year musical hiatus. With an unbelievable band to back him up, including Questlove on drums, the late “Spanky” on guitar, Pino Palladino on bass, and so many more legendary soul musicians, D’Angelo’s undeniable passion and energy is evident through these incredible videos. Though it was apparently that night that he “felt something that was like, whoa,” he told FunkIt, ultimately leading him to call it quits for well over a decade. The full band included D’angelo (vocals, keyboards), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (drums), Frankie “Knuckles” Walker (percussion), Pino Palladino (bass), James Poyser or sometimes June Bervine (keyboards), C. Edward “Spanky” Alford & Samuel “Norris” Jones (guitars), Anthony Hamilton, Shelby Johnson & Jack King (background vocals), Jacques “Brother Jacques” Schwarz-Bart (tenor saxophone), Russell Gunn or sometimes Roy Hargrove (trumpet), and Frank “Root” Lacy (trombone & trumpet). Seriously, does it get any better? The set, divided into four videos, includes upgraded audio that kicks in at about the 1:30 mark. Stop in the name of love, and enjoy these funk-heavy, soul-satisfying, groove-demanding tunes from D’Angelo & The Soultronics’ 7/16/2000 festival performance in The Hague, Netherlands:Devil’s Pie > Funk Jam > Send It OnFeel Like Makin Love > Chicken GreaseShit, Damn, Motherfucker, Brown Sugar Interlude > Untitled (How Does It Feel?)Lady > Funk Jam > Jonz In My Bonz > Funk Jam – At around the 4:40 mark of this video, D’Angelo breaks it down all the way to the ground and humps the stage for a solid minute. Most musicians and music lovers alike would agree, this is one band at the top of the list to go back in time and see. We are all grateful to have the Black Messiah back![Videos/Audio Courtesy of FunkItBlog]last_img read more
