Those claims, however, were dismissed by Bonucci’s wife, Martina Maccari.”His decision wasn’t due to an argument with Max Allegri,” Maccari told Rai Radio 1.”In a professional setting, I think balance between all parties is fundamental. NFL Week 2 Elo Ratings And Playoff Odds

It’s a cliche: Every game counts in a league that plays just 16 of them. But Benjamin Morris’s findings in his debut Skeptical Football column were nevertheless striking: A Week 1 or Week 2 game can affect an NFL team’s chances of making the playoffs by as much as 20 or 30 percent. We also see that reflected in FiveThirtyEight’s NFL Elo ratings playoff odds, a feature we debuted last week. What are Elo ratings? The short version: Elo ratings are a simple mathematical system originally designed to rate chess players. They’ve since been adapted to a number of sports such as soccer, and we’ve adapted them to the NFL. The Elo ratings only account for fairly basic information like wins and losses, strength of schedule and margin of victory. There are more advanced systems out there, but Elo ratings are transparent, easy to calculate and we can do a lot of fun stuff with them, like simulating the rest of the season and calculating playoff odds. For more on the methodology, see here.In our Week 1 ratings — which were based on a team’s Elo rating at the end of last season — the New England Patriots had a 73 percent chance of making the playoffs and the Miami Dolphins had just a 32 percent chance. But the Dolphins upset the Patriots, and now it’s almost even: New England is at 54 percent to make the playoffs and Miami at 50 percent. Why such a big shift? Well, every game counts (especially a divisional game; our simulation accounts for playoff tiebreakers). But also, the Patriots now look slightly worse than Elo originally pegged them, and the Dolphins look slightly better. Before Week 1, Miami had projected to win 7.7 games; it now projects to win 9.1. In other words, one NFL win for the Dolphins was worth more than one win in the Elo standings because Miami’s Elo rating improved. Here are the latest Elo ratings and playoff odds for all 32 teams:A few other comments:The teams with the largest gains on the week, in addition to the Dolphins, were the Minnesota Vikings, who gained 46 Elo points after demolishing the St. Louis Rams, and the Tennessee Titans, who added 38 Elo points after beating the Kansas City Chiefs. Both Minnesota and Tennessee are now better than even money to make the playoffs; the Titans are helped by playing in the league’s weakest division (although the NFC East might have something to say about that). It’s early, but perhaps we’re seeing the emergence of a Big Three. The Seattle Seahawks are the most likely team to win the Super Bowl, at 16 percent, followed by the San Francisco 49ers at 13 percent and the Denver Broncos at 11 percent. Then there’s a fairly big drop to the Carolina Panthers at 7 percent.Meanwhile, in the it’s-already-time-to-panic department, the Chiefs project to just a 6-10 record and have only a 13 percent chance of making the playoffs.Elo ratings can also be used to derive point spreads. We strongly advise that you don’t bet on these, at least not without considering a lot of other information — Vegas betting lines are too sophisticated to be beaten by a simple system like Elo. Still, it’s fun to track their progress. Last week, they went 8-8 against point spreads as listed at Pro-Football-Reference.com.There are some funky matchups this week. Elo has the Vikings at almost even money at home against New England, while Vegas has the Patriots as 3-point favorites. Another point of disagreement is Seattle at San Diego; Vegas has the Seahawks as 6-point favorites — a lot on the road against a playoff team. Elo thinks they should be favored over the Chargers by a field goal instead. read more

Guardiola delighted Man City have avoided champions curse

first_imgPep Guardiola is proud of the way Manchester City have remained in the hunt for the Premier League title after what’s happened to past champions in recent years. After storming to league crown last season in record-breaking fashion, City have had a much harder time on their hands this time around in the form of Liverpool. The Reds have won 20 of their 26 games to lead City by three points at the top of the Premier League table as they chase a first league title since 1990.But City can go back level on points with Liverpool later today should they defeat Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, albeit having played one more match. For Guardiola, however, the fact that his City team are still firmly in the mix to retain their league crown is the thing that he’s most proud of.The last team to successfully defend the title was Manchester United in 2009.“I know in the last five or six years what happened with the champions the year after, in which position they were,” said Guardiola, according to Goal.“All of them, they were out. They did not have a chance in that period to win the Premier League.“We are there. That is one of the things I am most delighted about this season.”The Catalan coach, who’s also won league titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the past, is aware that no team in the Premier League can be underestimated.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.Guardiola made reference to their shock 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on January 30 while discussing the level of competitiveness in England.“When the people say, ‘You underestimated Newcastle.’ No, no,” he said.“You don’t underestimate anyone if you are in the final of the Carabao Cup again and you are in all the competitions and fighting.“The previous seasons, Leicester [City] and Chelsea and the other ones – no chance. Conspiracy theorist releases image of UFO following a plane triggers alien frenzy

first_imgA UFO seen flying along an airplane in AustraliaYouTube: Mavi777Conspiracy theorists all across the world believe that alien life is a reality and argue that space agencies like NASA are intentionally covering up facts about extraterrestrial life to avoid public panic. Bringing up the heat around these claims, Mavi777, a popular conspiracy theory YouTube channel has now released the image of a UFO following a passenger plane. In a recent video, Mavi777 revealed that the video was shot on August 19, 2019, in the skies of Melbourne, Australia. The conspiracy theory YouTube channel also added that the eerie sighting was captured on camera by a person named Joanne Rhodes. In the image released by Mavi777, a seemingly disc-shaped UFO can be seen flying parallel to a passenger plane and at the first glance, the shape of the flying ship seems very similar to the alien vessels we have seen in Hollywood sci-fi flicks. After watching the video, viewers of the conspiracy theory channel started claiming that aliens are gearing up for disclosure and the increased UFO sightings all across the world indicate that the disclosure is imminent.A few days back, Mavi777 had released another video apparently shot in the skies of Fukushima, Japan. In the video, five UFOs were seen hovering in the skies above the nuclear plant in Fukushima. However, Donald Trump, the United States president, had revealed that he does not believe in the existence of aliens. A few months back, an ABC News reporter asked Donald Trump about the alleged alien sightings and the president replied that he is a disbeliever.”I want them to think whatever they think. I did have one very brief meeting on it. But people are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particular,” said Trump, despite increasing numbers of UFO sightings reported by US Navy officials.last_img read more

2 women finally breach India temple entry ban

first_imgIn this file photo taken on 18 October 2018 Indian Hindu devotees are pictured at the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in the southern state of Kerala. Photo: AFPTwo women on Wednesday entered one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines in south India becoming the first to go into Sabarimala temple since the Supreme Court ordered the end of a longstanding ban on women aged between 10 and 50, a state minister said. The temple in Kerala state has been at the centre of a prolonged showdown between Hindu devotees supporting the ban and women activists who have been forced back several times from Sabarimala. The women entered the hilltop temple just before dawn with police security.”We did not enter the shrine by climbing the 18 holy steps but went through the staff gate,” one of the women told local media.Kerala state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said: “It is a fact that the women entered the shrine. Police are bound to offer protection to anyone wanting to worship at the shrine.”The women’s entry into the temple is certain to provoke a new gender storm.A spokesman for the temple’s management, Sasikumar Varma, said that if priests confirmed women had entered Sabarimala “necessary purification rituals will be done.”Media reports said the head priest had ordered the temple closed for “purification”.The Supreme Court ruled on September 28 that the decades-old ban on women of menstruating age at Sabarimala, which is at the top of a hill a four-hour trek from the nearest village, was illegal.Repeated efforts by women to enter the temple were fought back by Hindu devotees. In October, devotees clashed with police leading to the arrest of more than 2,000 people. On Tuesday, there was more trouble when tens of thousands of women formed a human chain across Kerala state to back the demand for women’s access to the temple. The Supreme Court is to start hearing a legal challenge to its ruling on January 22.Many Hindu groups as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party fiercely oppose the court ruling. They argue that the court has ignored their belief that the deity Ayyappa was celibate.last_img read more

UPDATE Jailed Venezuela Opposition Leader Urges Resistance

first_img Share ___ 11:20 a.m. An attorney for former Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma is denying the Venezuelan Supreme Court’s assertion that he had faced legal restrictions on his ability to speak with the media while under house arrest. Omar Estacio tells news outlet VivoPlay that the high court’s claims that Ledezma violated the terms of his house arrest by talking to the press and allegedly being part of an “escape plan” are false. State security agents removed Ledezma and opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez from his their homes early Tuesday. The court says they violated terms of their house arrest. Ledezma was detained in 2015 and had been serving his sentence from home. Both men had recently posted videos online denouncing President Nicolas Maduro’s election for a special assembly given essentially unlimited powers and tasked with rewriting the constitution. ___ 11:15 a.m. The United Nations’ human rights chief says he is “deeply concerned” by the re-arrest of two leading Venezuelan opposition figures and is calling for the release of all people held for exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression. Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein urged Venezuelan authorities in a statement released in Geneva Tuesday “not to make an already extremely volatile situation even worse through the use of excessive force.” Zeid also called for “prompt, effective and independent” investigations into 10 deaths in clashes between protesters and police over the weekend. He appealed to all sides to refrain from violence. Opposition figures Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma, were taken from their homes in the middle of the night. Venezuela’s Supreme Court said they had violated the terms of their house arrest. #Líderes opositores de #Venezuela detenidos pic.twitter.com/j7ugrk76V6— Reuters Latam (@ReutersLatam) August 1, 2017___ 10:45 a.m. The U.S. State Department says it’s “deeply concerned with the Venezuelan government’s decision to re-arrest opposition leaders Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma.” It says the midnight detentions are further evidence that President Nicolas Maduro “is an authoritarian ruler who is not willing to respect fundamental human rights.” Venezuela’s Supreme Court says the two were detained early Tuesday because they violated terms of their house arrest. Both had been held for allegedly stirring up violence in earlier protests. Washington on Monday added Maduro to a steadily growing list of high-ranking Venezuelan officials targeted by financial sanctions. So far, the Trump administration has not delivered on threats to sanction Venezuela’s oil industry, which could undermine Maduro’s government but raise U.S. gas prices and deepen Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis. The moves follow Sunday’s election of a pro-government assembly with almost absolute power to reshape the country’s political system. ___ 10:15 a.m. Venezuela’s Supreme Court says two leading opposition figures have been jailed because they violated the terms of their house arrest. The nation’s highest court says Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma were removed from their homes early Tuesday after “official intelligence sources” determined there was a “escape plan” involving both men. The court added that Lopez isn’t permitted to engage in any sort of political activism and former Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma is prohibited from speaking to media outlets. Lopez was detained three years ago after protests against Maduro’s government and sentenced to more than a decade in prison. He was released last month to serve out his term on house arrest. The president of Venezuela’s opposition-dominated legislature says the allegations are “ridiculous” and the jailings “absolutely arbitrary.” ___ 9 a.m. An attorney says that Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez has been returned to the military prison from which he had been recently released. Lopez’s attorney Juan Carlos Gutierrez tells the Exitos radio station that the 46-year-old Lopez was pulled from his home and was taken to the Ramo Verde prison at about 3 a.m. He says the government’s decision to return Lopez to prison is “completely arbitrary” and says Lopez had obeyed the conditions imposed on his house arrest. Lopez had been released from Ramo Verde on July 8 after serving three years of a 13-year sentence for inciting violence at opposition rallies. Many human rights groups considered him a political prisoner. It’s not clear if former Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma also was taken to prison. Allies posted video online of him being taken from his home by security agents. ___ 4:05 a.m. Allies of two Venezuelan opposition leaders say Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma have been taken by authorities from the homes where they were under house arrest. Video posted on the Twitter account of Lopez’s wife early Tuesday shows a man being taken away from a Caracas home by state security agents. Wife Lilian Tintori says in a tweet that “they’ve just taken Leopoldo from the house. We don’t know where he is.” Lopez was detained three years after protests against President Nicolas Maduro’s government and sentenced to more than a decade in prison on charges that include inciting protesters to violence. He was released last month to serve the rest of his term under house arrest. Ledezma, a former Caracas mayor, was also detained in 2015 and has been under house arrest. ___ 12 a.m. President Nicolas Maduro brushed off new U.S. sanctions on him and condemnation at home and abroad of the newly chosen constitutional assembly, saying the vote has given him a popular mandate to radically overhaul Venezuela’s political system. Maduro said Monday evening he had no intention of deviating from his plans to rewrite the constitution and go after a string of enemies, from independent Venezuelan news channels to gunmen he claimed were sent by neighboring Colombia to disrupt the vote as part of an international conspiracy led by the man he calls “Emperor Donald Trump.” “They don’t intimidate me. The threats and sanctions of the empire don’t intimidate me for a moment,” Maduro said on national television. “I don’t listen to orders from the empire, not now or ever … Bring on more sanctions, Donald Trump.” The 6-minute long video shared Tuesday shows Lopez rubbing his wife’s belly and saying he has “one more reason to fight for Venezuela.”The Latest on the political situation in Venezuela (all times local):2:05 p.m.Supporters of Leopoldo Lopez have a released a video he taped a week before state security agents whisked him back to a military prison. The 6-minute long video shared Tuesday shows Lopez rubbing his wife’s belly and saying he has “one more reason to fight for Venezuela.” He calls the pregnancy “the best news I’ve received in the last 3 1/2 years” — a reference to the time he spent behind bars.Lopez was released from the Ramo Verde prison in June and granted house arrest to serve out the remainder of his 13-year sentence for inciting violence at opposition rallies. The couple has at times been allowed conjugal visits.Lopez says he recorded the video knowing he might be imprisoned again — as he was early Thursday.___1:35 p.m.Three legislators in Venezuela say they are breaking with the pro-government Great Patriotic Pole party and forming a new faction in opposition to President Nicolas Maduro’s rewrite of the nation’s constitution.Lawmaker Eustoquio Contreras told legislators at the opposition-controlled National Assembly Tuesday that the nation is in crisis and headed toward a civil war that must be avoided. The Great Patriotic Pole is a coalition of 17 parties formed in 2012 to support the re-election of the late President Hugo Chavez, who bequeathed power to Maduro. The legislators say their new faction will be called the “Parliamentary Socialist Bloc.”The dissentions are among the highest-profile to emerge recently from among pro-government leaders. 11:30 a.m. Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis is rejecting the idea of EU sanctions against Venezuela, saying they could hurt the population. He said Tuesday that Spain instead favors individual measures such as travel restrictions against those responsible for the situation. Dastis said there is “great concern over the arrests of Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma and opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. Dastis ruled out recalling the Spanish ambassador, saying he was more effective in Venezuela helping Spaniards living there. Professor notes wait for Nobel science prizes is growing alarming long

first_img(Phys.org) —Santo Fortunato, Associate Professor of Complex Systems at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland has published a Correspondence piece in the journal Nature, outlining what he describes as an increasing time lag between notable work accomplished by scientists and the awarding of a Nobel Prize for what they’ve achieved. A glance at secret process behind Nobel delay Of course another explanation for the time lag might be the nature of scientific discoveries in general—as we learn more it takes more time for new discoveries to prove themselves. On the other hand it could be that committee members feel more comfortable giving awards to people who have maintained strong reputations throughout their career—to avoid embarrassment should a blemish show up on their record after their groundbreaking work.In any case, Fortunato notes that the trend is increasing across all disciplines, and that there is one example already of what he calls the extinction of laureates—Robert Brout who would have been on the stage with François Englert and Peter Higgs last year when they received a shared Physics award for the discovery of the Higgs boson—he’d passed away at the age of 82, two years earlier. Prior to 1940, for example, just 20 percent of recipients for work in physics had to wait 20 years or more, 15 percent for chemistry and 24 percent for those working in the physiology or medicine fields. In contrast, since 1985, those percentages have grown to 60, 52 and 45 percent. At the rate we’re going, he notes dryly, there will come a day sometime soon when no one will be able to win any of the awards because they would have all died already—prizes are not granted posthumously. No one really knows why the wait for receiving a prize has grown so long. Some suggest it’s because the committees that grant them find more modern work less ground-breaking and thus keep going back in time to find something they see as worthy. Others suggest the opposite is true, that the glut of breakthroughs creates a backlog, forcing committee members to choose people who deserve the award before they grow old and die (similar to the problem found with many sports organizations as induction into various Halls of Fame tend to skew towards older and older players.) In this case, the problem would be that so few people are awarded each year. © 2014 Phys.org Citation: Professor notes wait for Nobel science prizes is growing alarming long (2014, April 10) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-04-professor-nobel-science-prizes-alarming.htmllast_img read more
