first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppTurks and Caicos, July 27, 2017 – Providenciales – Mr. Speaker, members of this Honorable House, persons in the gallery and those listening via radio and the internet, good morning.Given that my Government promised change, Mr. Speaker, I am thankful for the opportunity to report briefly on some of the progress that has been made in my Ministry to bring about positive.Mr. Speaker first and foremost I wish to start with our commitment to children of this society as one of the signs of a good and caring Government is the importance it gives to persons at risks within our society. No one can argue that children does not represent one such group of personsIn this regard Mr. Speaker, I am happy to report that the Cabinet, on the 30th of June this year, approved the Multi-Agency Protocol for the Prevention, Reporting and Management of Child Abuse and Neglect for the Turks and Caicos Islands. It also endorsed the policy on the supervision of staff working on child safeguarding issues within the Department of Social Development.Mr. Speaker, the development and sign-off of this protocol was seven years in the making.Mr. Speaker, it took my Government six months to get it done.We recognize that our commitment to protecting children is more than a statement. It is a job that we take seriously and we are demonstrating this by putting measures in place to ensure that standards are upheld by all agencies that have responsibility for their well-being.Signing of the protocol will take place during the last week of September and we look forward to celebrating this achievement.Another group of persons at risks in our community Mr. Speaker, are the young men who, for one reason or another, end up on the wrong side of the law, and are depending on society to assist them not with handouts or free gifts, but with a hand up.They want a hand up through education, through skills training and through a job to provide for themselves and their families. In this regard Mr. Speaker my Ministry is presently drafting a framework for the introduction of a “Chance for Change Programme.”This programme will not be a success without the partnership of persons who are willing to make a difference and the persons themselves who are seeking a chance for change.I would like to put the private and public sector on notice that we will be depending on them to partner with us on this important endeavor and that they should begin to think about ways through which they can assist.More importantly Mr. Speaker, we invite all good corporate citizens to reach out to us, before we have a chance to reach out to you. This will be a good sign of your desire and willingness to help.Moving on Mr. Speaker, My Government has heard the complaints from the public on service delivery and access to services in the Road Safety Department.I am happy to report Mr. Speaker that the following actions have been taken.1)Motorists on Providenciales are now able to licence their vehicle every day of the work week as opposed to only Monday, Wednesday and Friday2)Decals have been purchased that can be issued in any year and any type of vehicle which means that the Department will no longer have excess stock that cannot be used, and with proper management, they should never run out.3)Equipment is being installed in North Caicos and South Caicos to facilitate the drivers licence process and soon, very soon, motorists will not have to travel to Provo or Grand Turk to obtain or renew a driver’s licence.Mr. Speaker, this is real change and there are more changes to come. While I am on the topic of transportation Mr. Speaker, I would like to announce that today, Wednesday, July 26th, 2017, my Ministry will be launching an online survey on the introduction of a public transportation system in the Turks and Caicos Islands.Mr. Speaker, no doubt there will be a need to engage the public further on this, however, it is important that we seek the views of residents. This is necessary to assist with developing a clear policy on a public transport system, from the outset. The consultation will run for a period of four weeks and I invite all persons to participate.Information about how to access the survey will be issued in a Public Notice, through social media, on government website (www.gov.tc) and the local newspapers. Finally Mr. Speaker, it gives me pleasure to confirm and announce that the contract for a new post office in Providenciales has been signed and we look forward to breaking ground for the construction of this new facility in the next few weeks. Cost to Relocate Fairgrounds from MCAS Yuma at Least 67M Study Finds

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR Relocating the Yuma County Fairgrounds in an effort to eliminate land use conflicts with neighboring Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in southwestern Arizona would cost from $67 million to $94 million, a consulting firm concluded. Facilities consulting firm Populous last month outlined the final results of a $400,000 feasibility study, which was funded by grants from DOD’s Office of Economic Adjustment and the state Military Affairs Commission, reported the Yuma Sun.Funding to move the fairgrounds could come from a variety of sources, including federal and state agencies, Jennifer Albers, principal planner for Yuma’s Department of Community Development, told residents. DOD possibly could contribute funding, she said, since the fairgrounds are located inside the air station’s clear zone and accident potential zone No. 1.“It’ll be a local decision, whatever we do,” Albers said, with the city, county, fair board, the Marine Corps and airport board playing a role. “There’s no push by anybody to make this happen right now.”The value of the study is that local leaders and residents have “three things we didn’t have before” — a master plan, a cost estimate and potential locations, she said.Concern about the proximity of the fairgrounds to the air station has grown in recent years as the property has become increasingly busy; it now is used for 200 days annually. In addition to concern about safety, noise issues also have been cited as a reason for considering relocating the fairgrounds. The first phase of a possible relocation, costing $67 million, would cover the cost of purchasing 105 acres of land, building infrastructure and facilities, and contingencies. Expanding the fairgrounds to 160 acres, if there were sufficient demand, would bring the cost to $94 million.A market analysis revealed that a new site for the fairgrounds could add between 85 and 119 days of use for non-fair events.last_img read more

While Armstrong’s Reverb auction in late 2017 no doubt added to the band’s comfort level in parting with items from their collections, Cool confessed that as a hoarder, his reason behind the auction is that “my psychiatrist said I have to do this.””After 30 years of collecting odds and ends and really good stuff, what ended up happening was I got too many,” said Armstrong. “I think every guitar to me has its own character.” The 44 guitars up for auction include a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop as well as the first guitar Armstrong ever owned, an acoustic Harmony Stella Parlor. He used the latter to record “F.O.D.” on Dookie, which won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 37th GRAMMY Awards, the band’s first of four wins. Dirnt is offering up more than 20 pieces of studio gear as well as amps, including a Mesa/Boogie Basis M-2000 and a vintage Ampeg SVT.Cool is offering one of the drum kits he burned on stage as well as a new “old stock” Slingerland Spitfire Tré Cool Signature Drum Kit he says is “probably the only one left in existence.” Cool basically burned all the other ones. Where is gau mata in BJPs 2019 manifesto Heres how Twitterati reacted

first_imgThe repackaging jumlas [Representational Image]    TwitterAfter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its 2019 manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, people are saddened to know that there are no mentions of cow protection in its latest edition. Since 1984, the BJP has been carrying the cow protection and its welfare as one of their top priorities. The manifesto which went deep with rest core duties including the Ayodhya land dispute and nationalist sentiments forgot to favour cows this time. This time the party has limited itself to mention the ‘gaumatha’ only once that too for ‘gaushalas’ (cow shelters). The cow shelters in the country will be linked to the promotion of organic farming and animal husbandry. Isn’t it just sad that the term cow has not been mentioned in the manifesto? For years the saffron party had a separate place for the cows in its heart and soul which has just vanished into thin air. The party which has blamed every other political party for the violence against the cattle and ban on cow slaughter has now shunned out on ‘gaumatha’.BJP and Gaumatha policiesThe BJP had given its detailed plans over different schemes relating to the welfare of cows since 1984. Here are some:-1984 – The party proposed a ban on cow slaughter.1989 – Working towards the welfare of cows and a total ban on cow slaughter.1991 – Again a total ban on cow slaughter and that no one has a fundamental right of trade or business to slaughter cows.1996 – Policies for improved cattle breeding, amendment of Article 48 of Indian constitution (preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle)2004 – BJP recommends the implementation of the national cattle development board2009 – BJP refers to Supreme Court judgement and said that keeping with the Directive Principles of State Policy, the necessary legal framework will be created to protect and promote cow and its progeny.2014 – Department of Animal Husbandry will be suitably strengthened and empowered for the protection and promotion of cow and its progeny due to its contribution towards agriculture.People’s reaction While the people who were searching for new policies related to cows in the latest BJP manifesto were left in serious disappointment, some of the netizens have brought up the question in social media. Here are a few reactions:- Gaumatha does not forgive… That utter disappointmentcenter_img No idea mate Yes, unfortunate indeed!last_img read more

Conspiracy theorist releases image of UFO following a plane triggers alien frenzy

first_imgA UFO seen flying along an airplane in AustraliaYouTube: Mavi777Conspiracy theorists all across the world believe that alien life is a reality and argue that space agencies like NASA are intentionally covering up facts about extraterrestrial life to avoid public panic. Bringing up the heat around these claims, Mavi777, a popular conspiracy theory YouTube channel has now released the image of a UFO following a passenger plane. In a recent video, Mavi777 revealed that the video was shot on August 19, 2019, in the skies of Melbourne, Australia. The conspiracy theory YouTube channel also added that the eerie sighting was captured on camera by a person named Joanne Rhodes. In the image released by Mavi777, a seemingly disc-shaped UFO can be seen flying parallel to a passenger plane and at the first glance, the shape of the flying ship seems very similar to the alien vessels we have seen in Hollywood sci-fi flicks. After watching the video, viewers of the conspiracy theory channel started claiming that aliens are gearing up for disclosure and the increased UFO sightings all across the world indicate that the disclosure is imminent.A few days back, Mavi777 had released another video apparently shot in the skies of Fukushima, Japan. In the video, five UFOs were seen hovering in the skies above the nuclear plant in Fukushima. However, Donald Trump, the United States president, had revealed that he does not believe in the existence of aliens. A few months back, an ABC News reporter asked Donald Trump about the alleged alien sightings and the president replied that he is a disbeliever.”I want them to think whatever they think. I did have one very brief meeting on it. But people are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particular,” said Trump, despite increasing numbers of UFO sightings reported by US Navy officials.last_img read more

2 women finally breach India temple entry ban

first_imgIn this file photo taken on 18 October 2018 Indian Hindu devotees are pictured at the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in the southern state of Kerala. Photo: AFPTwo women on Wednesday entered one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines in south India becoming the first to go into Sabarimala temple since the Supreme Court ordered the end of a longstanding ban on women aged between 10 and 50, a state minister said. The temple in Kerala state has been at the centre of a prolonged showdown between Hindu devotees supporting the ban and women activists who have been forced back several times from Sabarimala. The women entered the hilltop temple just before dawn with police security.”We did not enter the shrine by climbing the 18 holy steps but went through the staff gate,” one of the women told local media.Kerala state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said: “It is a fact that the women entered the shrine. Police are bound to offer protection to anyone wanting to worship at the shrine.”The women’s entry into the temple is certain to provoke a new gender storm.A spokesman for the temple’s management, Sasikumar Varma, said that if priests confirmed women had entered Sabarimala “necessary purification rituals will be done.”Media reports said the head priest had ordered the temple closed for “purification”.The Supreme Court ruled on September 28 that the decades-old ban on women of menstruating age at Sabarimala, which is at the top of a hill a four-hour trek from the nearest village, was illegal.Repeated efforts by women to enter the temple were fought back by Hindu devotees. In October, devotees clashed with police leading to the arrest of more than 2,000 people. On Tuesday, there was more trouble when tens of thousands of women formed a human chain across Kerala state to back the demand for women’s access to the temple. The Supreme Court is to start hearing a legal challenge to its ruling on January 22.Many Hindu groups as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party fiercely oppose the court ruling. They argue that the court has ignored their belief that the deity Ayyappa was celibate.last_img read more

Perfect Timing

first_imgSeptember 1, 2007 Your time and energy may be limited, but opportunities to learn more about eBay are in constant supply. As a part-time seller, you’ll benefit by learning as much as you can about selling on eBay. After all, if you’re going to manage your risk and maximize the return on your efforts, you need to know just as much as full-timers do.Part-timers can help themselves a great deal by picking an area they already know a lot about. “You have to have an interest in it, and you have to have a feel for it,” Ford-Freeman says. “And you have to be willing to educate yourself in the forums.”One such forum is the Part-Time eBay Sellers Discussion Board, a place for part-time sellers to share experiences and information. On the forums, sellers with lots of experience offer countless nuggets of advice to help newcomers. “I learned everything I know about selling on eBay from the forums,” says Ford-Freeman.The Part-Timer eBay Sellers Discussion Board isn’t the only place part-timers can go for help. eBay has many tools that part-timers can use to reduce the amount of time they spend on listing and managing sales (see “Power Up: It’s Tool Time” at right). And the huge amount of information and advice available from resources like Seller Central is also useful for many part-time and full-time sellers. The tools and resources available at Seller Central range from strategies for getting started to best practices of top sellers and e-mail newsletters with the latest tips on promotions and selling features.Never Gonna Give It UpVeteran part-timers like Ford-Freeman have great confidence that they’re on top of their markets and have the skills to move their inventory. In the future, these part-timers intend to keep working at their businesses on eBay, not only because they enjoy the profits, but also because they gain a sense of fulfillment from their work.Ford-Freeman, who is approaching retirement from her day job, plans to work a little harder at her business in order to pay for post-retirement activities. “I plan to indulge in all those things I can’t [indulge in] right now, like researching, writing and traveling,” she says. “I think supplementing [my income] with eBay is going to be the solution.”And Etter is confident that part-time sellers will continue to be an important part of eBay. “The future,” he says, “will be full of opportunities for part-timers.”Mark Henricks writes on business and technology for leading publications and is author of Not Just a Living. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Janice Ford-Freeman loves shopping garage sales for bargain-priced vintage clothing. She loves taking her finds and selling them on eBay even more. Ford-Freeman’s business on eBay, which she conducts under eBay User ID crestwoodian, is a part-time endeavor that blends enjoyment and income. “It gave me a fabulous outlet to market the bargains I found,” says Ford-Freeman, who works by day at The University of Alabama, Birmingham. “It’s been wonderful.”Ford-Freeman has plenty of company from other part-time sellers, says Nathan Etter, senior manager at eBay. According to a June 2006 ACNielsen study, 1.3 million sellers worldwide make all or part of their living on eBay. “A big percentage of those are part-time sellers,” says Etter.People sell part time on eBay for a number of reasons. “First of all,” says Etter, “it can be extremely profitable.” Part-timers usually don’t hire employees or rent warehouses, so they enjoy lower overhead than many businesses. Ford-Freeman, for instance, does as much as $3,000 in a single month working out of her home.Flexibility also attracts part-timers. “They can [sell] on their own time, after their kids are asleep or whenever they want to,” Etter says. “And, equally important, they can do as much or as little [selling] as they want. The business really scales to fit their lives.”Ford-Freeman normally works about 20 hours a week but sometimes cuts back on business to a sales level as low as $150 a month. “[My success] really depends on how much work I put into [my business on eBay], as well as the market,” she explains. Many part-time sellers are motivated by a desire to find an enjoyable hobby with a moneymaking sideline. “I really like the extra money,” says Ford-Freeman. “And I get to indulge this interest of mine. [Instead of] buying all these cool, funky old clothes and having them pile up in my house, now when they pile up, I get them advertised and shipped.”Part-Time ChallengesDespite the rewards, part-time selling presents some special challenges. According to Etter, sourcing is the biggest trouble spot. “The number-one challenge for our part-time sellers is getting a consistent [source] of properly priced inventory,” Etter says.Vendors maintain a steady supply of goods for part-timers, but selling only part time on eBay makes it tough to know what is in demand and, more important, what is about to be in demand. “As a part-time seller, you have less time to spend looking for trends and getting ahead with new products that are hot in the marketplace and may be in short supply,” Etter says. “If you’re not full time, you’re not constantly on that quest, and you may not have as big a network of suppliers.” To minimize supplier problems, Etter says, be consistent. You may not work at sourcing full time, but don’t stop looking for suppliers for so long that you lose touch.Part-timers can get the biggest bang for their buck by following and forecasting the demand for their items. One of the most popular resources for this is What’s Hot, a part of Seller Central that lists ways to identify bestselling categories and stay informed about upcoming promotions and buying trends. “Markets may change, particularly if you’re selling very trendy [items],” Etter explains. “If you’ve acquired a lot of inventory and the market doesn’t sustain it, you may end up [underwater].”Part-timers also have to deal with uneven income from their endeavors. If they’re traveling or too busy with jobs and the demands of daily life to attend to their business on eBay, sales may stop altogether. And working an irregular, abbreviated schedule can make it challenging to give great customer service.eBay provides customer service tools that can help part-timers manage their schedules and meet their customers’ expectations: Sellers can create Frequently Asked Questions lists with standard replies for curious buyers, and eBay Store owners can notify prospective buyers about their upcoming vacations. One key to success as a part-timer is carefully choosing the items you sell and the markets you sell to. “There are items on eBay that are easier to sell than others,” Etter says. In general, he says, products that have a high ratio of value to density (or weight) are easier to sell. In other words, lighter, smaller, more costly products tend to sell better than heavier, bulkier, less expensive products. “We find part-timers in almost every category,” Etter says. “But the ones who are most successful focus on the value-to-density ratio.”Scarcity is another important factor when it comes to selecting the right product or category for a part-time eBay enterprise. There is always a market for limited edition, exclusive and retired items as well as any item that seems scarce in supply, says Etter. “If you can get consistent, properly priced access to that inventory, those are great products to start with on eBay,” he says. 8 min read Power Up: It’s Tool Time Some eBay part-timers like to do things hands-on, in what could be called the old-fashioned way. Other sellers look for easier, faster ways to get their work done. Janice Ford-Freeman, for instance, always lists using InkFrog, a third-party, eBay Certified Provider that automates the listing process. One of the most useful tools for part-time eBay sellers is Turbo Lister. “You can list items on the site using our regular form, but Turbo Lister has additional capabilities,” says Nathan Etter, senior manager at eBay. “When you’re selling similar items in volume, it makes the listing process much easier.”Selling Manager is another eBay tool well-suited for part-timers who want to boost sales volume without a corresponding increase in time. “Selling Manager helps volume sellers manage their inventory, keep track of activity on the site and keep track of sales over time,” explains Etter.eBay Stores is another option worth considering for part-timers because it gives sellers a permanent shelf for merchandising items. “[eBay Store owners] have a number of tools that allow them to produce newsletters, offer discounts or perform other marketing [tasks] that drive buyers to their sites and potentially create repeat buyers,” adds Etter. “An eBay Store is a very inexpensive way for a part-time seller to create an online presence, and it doesn’t take nearly as much time and money as [launching] your own website.”In addition to the tools offered by eBay, many Certified Providers offer tools that give part-timers a wide range of sophisticated capabilities. Etter says consulting services such as As Was give eBay sellers valuable assistance on topics such as serving customers and listing artwork. Aspyro, another Certified Provider of consulting services, helps sellers analyze and develop overall strategies to maximize sales and profits.Listing items for sale is one of the most time-intensive yet critical parts of the business, and tools that speed up the process are popular with part-timers. Auctiva, One-Minute Lister, Vendio and other third-party listing tools can help sellers with image hosting, templates and inventory management. “The solutions aren’t free,” says Etter, “but part-timers find they are worth the investment in terms of saving time and [boosting] profits.” It’s What You Know Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
