Ted Danson Confronts Arctic Oil Exploration

first_imgWhen Royal Dutch Shell requested an extension to their Arctic oil exploration leases from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), actor and healthy oceans advocate Ted Danson created a petition to encourage BSEE to turn it down. The extension, he says, would provide another five years of exploration for the only oil company that is still drilling in the US Arctic Ocean, after years of failure, plagued by mistakes and problems.“Shell already has a dangerous track record,” says Danson’s petition, “and if it’s allowed five more years to drill on the leases in question, the Arctic’s polar bears, ice seals, belugas and many other iconic inhabitants will be thrust further in harm’s way. The oil industry cannot adequately contain or clean a spill in the Arctic Ocean, and a single accident could cause serious harm to the sensitive ocean environment and the communities and wildlife that depend on it.”Danson’s petition is close to two thirds of the 150,000 signature goal. You can sign the petition here.Copyright ©2015Look to the Starslast_img read more
