Teaching could face exodus by unhappy staff

first_imgTeaching could face exodus by unhappy staffOn 14 Jan 2003 in Personnel Today A third of England’s teachers want to leave the profession within fiveyears. A poll of 70,000 teachers across England reveals that 35 per cent said theyare likely to quit teaching within the next five years – prompted by concernsover workload, increasing bureaucracy and poor discipline. Carol Adams, chief executive of the General Teaching Council for England(GTC), which carried out the survey with Mori and The Guardian newspaper, said:”Overall, we find too many enthusiastic new teachers, who are mostly youngwomen graduates, rapidly losing their enthusiasm. “For them, within the first five years, initially positive expectationsabout what they see as a creative, challenging and rewarding career, turn intoa wish to change job and a reluctance to say they would choose teaching again. We should ask honestly why this happens.” More than half of those polled said their morale was lower than when theybegan teaching, and a third would not teach if they had their time again. www.gtce.org.uk Previous Article Next Article Related posts:No related photos.
