Women’s Basketball Falls to Missouri in Overtime in First Round of NCAA Tournament

first_imgStory Links Full Schedule Roster Overtime started with the teams trading three-pointers as Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) made the first followed by one from Missouri that was followed by Maddie Monahan’s (Silver Lake, Minn.). Cierra Porter then made one for the Tigers that tied the score at 70-70. Missouri scored to take the lead but it was brief as Hittner nailed a three-pointer to go up 73-72 with 1:38 on the clock. Cunningham made two more free throws to take the lead again, but Rhine made one of two free throws for another tie at 74-all. Amber Smith made a short jumper for a 76-74 lead, but Dean was fouled on the next possession. She made both free throws for the game’s final tie at 76-76 with 15 seconds left. After a timeout, Drake’s defense looked like it was going to force another extra period, but Jordan Roundtree threw up a deep desperation three-pointer with less than one second left as Hittner was called for a foul that resulted in three free throw attempts. Roundtree missed the first, made the second and missed the third as the Bulldogs quickly rebounded the miss and called timeout. With the ball at half court, Rose found Hittner open at the top of the arc but her game-winning attempt was long off the back of the rim as Drake’s outstanding 2018-19 season came to an end. Sophie Cunningham scored a game-high 21 points for the Tigers, including making a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left that tied the game at 64-64 with 41 seconds left in regulation. Cunnigham’s free throws came after Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) put Drake up 64-62 with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter. It was a back-and-forth, exciting game with 14 ties and 12 lead changes. Rhine had a shot blocked in regulation with two seconds left and after a timeout Missouri (24-10) was able to get off a half court heave that was off the mark as the game went to overtime with the score 64-64. Hittner scored a team-high 19 points for Drake (27-7), which had three others finish in double figures. Hittner just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go with four assists and one steal. Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) had 18 points and Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) added 10 points. Off the bench, Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) scored 12 points, handed out three assists and nabbed two steals. Bachrodt, Dean, Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) and Miller concluded outstanding careers with the heartbreaking loss. The quartet helped Drake win five MVC titles, 124 games and make the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
