Guyana named as CARIFTA 2021 host

first_img(CMC) – Guyana has been named as host for the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games in 2021, marking the first time in the country’s history that the region’s premier junior track and field meet will be staged here. The 48th games concluded in Cayman Islands on Easter Monday, with Bermuda now set to play host to the event next year.Guyana’s athletics chief, Aubrey Hutson, said the country had lobbied organisers with the main argument that it was a “travesty” the country, located on the South America mainland, had never yet staged the games.“To have this meet go on for 50 years and we not hosting, I think it was a travesty, and it is one of the main points that I raised with the whole CARIFTA congress, that they need to come to Guyana, and that was the selling point,” Hutson said in a statement.“We, hosting at home, will be able to put two athletes in every event. So, starting now we have two years to prepare to have two athletes in every event at CARIFTA, and I think that we will really and truly rival Jamaica who has been running away with this event every year.”Not considered powerhouses in Caribbean athletics, Guyana had a successful outing in Cayman Islands, picking up four gold medals en route to finishing with 10 medals overall. The performance left them fifth on the medal tables only behind perennial champions Jamaica with 85, The Bahamas with 26, Trinidad and Tobago with 24 and Barbados with 11.Hutson said he anticipated the hosting of the meet would result in a considerable boost for Guyana’s tourism product.“Organisers need to understand that we need to be aware that nearly 600 athletes are coming here to compete at one meet and then there are the home fans that follow them,” he pointed out.“There are Jamaicans and Trinidadians and Bahamians who basically save their money whole year round just to go to CARIFTA Games.”last_img read more

Three days later it was La Liga opposition, with a clash against Sevilla in Boston on July 21.The Reds then made a trip to New York to play Sporting on July 24 before returning to the UK four days later for a game against Serie A giants Napoli at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield – the home of Scottish rugby.A clash against Ligue 1 giants Lyon takes place in Geneva on July 31 before Liverpool lock horns with familiar foes Manchester City at the beginning of August for in the Community Shield – the official curtain-raiser for the English club season. They had been scheduled to face Bundesliga side Schalke, but the game has been cancelled due to the earlier date on which the Reds open their league campaign.Liverpool 2019-20 transfer activity Having spent big money in recent years to bring in players such as Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, the summer of 2019 is set to be a relatively quiet transfer window for Liverpool. The squad that Klopp has built is a formidable one, which the 2018-19 campaign showed, and accordingly, the German coach is under no great pressure to strengthen too much.A forward, to take pressure off Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, is high on the agenda when it comes to areas in need of bolstering. The likes of Timo Werner and James Maddison have been linked. There will certainly be a number of first-team departures, however, with Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno leaving for free, while Nathaniel Clyne and Danny Ings will also be heading through the exit door. Liverpool players will surely be wondering what more they can do when they attempt to improve upon their last campaign in 2019-20.Jurgen Klopp’s job involves rallying his squad to go again after a season that saw them miss out on Premier League glory despite amassing a remarkable 97 points and that unenviable task gets under way in earnest in early July.
